PoE Injector, PoE Switch, or PoE Extender: What Should You Buy?

PoE is one of the easiest ways to simplify a network install, but the wrong power choice can cause random reboots, failed cameras, weak access point performance, or a messy rack. The decision usually comes down to injector, switch, extender, or a full PoE upgrade.

Use a PoE injector for one or two devices

A PoE injector is useful when the existing switch has no PoE and you only need to power a small number of devices. It is often the fastest path for a single access point, camera, or phone.

Use a PoE switch for several devices

A PoE switch is cleaner when powering multiple cameras, APs, phones, or IoT devices. Check total power budget, per-port power, uplink speed, management needs, and whether the switch supports the PoE standard your devices require.

Use a PoE extender carefully

Extenders can help with distance problems, but they do not create free power. Confirm cable quality, device power draw, and the upstream PoE budget before relying on an extender.

  • Device PoE requirement: 802.3af, 802.3at, 802.3bt, or passive PoE.
  • Number of powered devices.
  • Total PoE power budget.
