Choosing the right transceiver is not only about finding the cheapest module with the right speed. The part also has to match the switch port, fiber type, connector, distance, wavelength, and host compatibility requirements.
Start with the port speed and form factor
Common form factors include SFP for 1G, SFP+ for 10G, SFP28 for 25G, QSFP+ for 40G, QSFP28 for 100G, and newer QSFP-DD or OSFP modules for higher-speed links. A port may physically accept a module while still limiting which speeds are supported, so always check the switch or NIC datasheet.
Match fiber type, connector, and reach
Short-reach optics are often used with multimode fiber such as OM3 or OM4. Longer links often use singlemode fiber such as OS2. Connector type matters too: LC is common for many SFP and QSFP optics, while MPO/MTP appears on several high-density and breakout applications.
Do not ignore compatibility coding
Some platforms are tolerant of generic optics. Others expect coding for Cisco, Arista, Juniper, Dell, HP, Ubiquiti, Mellanox, or another host family. When in doubt, send the switch model and existing module part number before ordering.
Checklist before buying
- Switch or NIC brand and model.
- Required speed and port type.
- Fiber type: OS2, OM3, OM4, or copper DAC.
- Connector: LC, SC, MPO/MTP, or RJ45.
- Distance between endpoints.
- Platform compatibility requirement.
