Switch uplinks and server connections usually come down to three choices: DAC cables, AOC cables, or separate optics with fiber patch cords. The right answer depends on distance, flexibility, cost, compatibility, and how often the link may change.
DAC cables are strong for short rack runs
Direct attach copper cables are popular inside the same rack or between nearby racks. They are simple, cost-effective, and do not require separate optics. Passive DACs are common for shorter runs, while active DACs can support longer distances depending on speed and platform support.
AOC cables help when copper gets heavy or distance grows
Active optical cables integrate optics and fiber into one cable assembly. They are lighter than copper DACs and useful for longer runs, but they are less modular because the optical ends are fixed to the cable.
Fiber patch cords plus optics are the most modular
Separate optics and LC or MPO/MTP patch cables give more flexibility. You can replace a module or cable independently, choose the correct reach, and reuse structured fiber cabling. This is often best for cross-connects, building links, and changing infrastructure.
